Bio
Phil is a highly experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist with an extensive clinical career spanning specialist NHS services, higher education and international healthcare. Alongside her clinical practice, she is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy at Leeds Beckett University, where she teaches postgraduate physiotherapy programmes and mentors the next generation of physiotherapists. Her passion for education extends far beyond the UK, having taught physiotherapy in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Madagascar, India and several other developing countries, helping to develop rehabilitation services and support healthcare professionals around the world.
Clinically, Phil specialises in the assessment and treatment of complex musculoskeletal conditions, with particular expertise in spinal rehabilitation. She has dedicated much of her career to helping people with persistent neck and back pain, often supporting individuals who have exhausted other rehabilitation options. As a McKenzie Method® tutor, she is passionate about empowering people to understand and self-manage their symptoms through education, movement and evidence-based rehabilitation. She believes that equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence to manage their condition is fundamental to achieving long-term success.
Phil’s commitment to evidence-based practice underpins every aspect of her work. She continually updates her clinical knowledge to ensure her patients benefit from the latest research, manual therapy techniques and rehabilitation strategies. She has extensive experience treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic joint and muscle pain, spinal disorders and complex movement problems. Her treatment approach combines expert clinical reasoning, hands-on therapy, exercise prescription and patient education to create personalised rehabilitation programmes that deliver lasting improvements in function and quality of life.
Recognising the close relationship between neurological and musculoskeletal movement, Phil also provides joint consultation clinics alongside the specialist neurological physiotherapists. Together they assess complex movement patterns and develop integrated rehabilitation plans, helping individuals optimise movement efficiency and maximise their functional independence.
Throughout her career, Phil has held several senior NHS positions across Yorkshire and Lancashire, including a Clinical Specialist role within the Pennine Acute Trust, where she worked closely alongside orthopaedic consultants managing complex spinal and musculoskeletal conditions. Her wealth of clinical experience enables her to confidently assess and treat even the most challenging presentations.
Internationally, Phil has made a significant contribution to physiotherapy education. During her years working in Bangladesh, she not only transformed the lives of many patients but also played a key role in advancing physiotherapy education and clinical practice. Her teaching has since taken her to countries including Afghanistan, Madagascar and India, where she has supported the development of local clinicians and sustainable rehabilitation services. She is passionate about sharing knowledge and believes education is one of the most powerful ways to improve healthcare on a global scale.
Alongside her professional work, Phil has volunteered for many years with St George’s Crypt in Leeds, providing physiotherapy support for both staff and people experiencing homelessness. She is also registered with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and holds a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer qualification, reflecting her passion for helping people maximise functional fitness regardless of age, ability or health condition.
Whether teaching future physiotherapists, supporting clinicians internationally or helping individuals overcome persistent pain, Phil brings the same commitment to evidence-based practice, education and empowering people to achieve their full potential.
