Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term neurological condition affecting the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
It is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective covering around nerve fibres.
Damage to myelin (demyelination) disrupts communication between the brain and the body and can also lead to damage to the underlying nerve fibres.
